DESIGN OF AN ALL BOYS BOARDING SCHOOL IN SAUDI ARABIA

  • Space Planning

Subsequently to the interior design for The World Academy in King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia, INNOCAD has been entrusted with the design of a boarding school on the same premises. By enhancing the principles of NEW LEARNING the goal was to offer students spaces for living and learning in a community that prepares them for a life in a modern society. Learning from a city’s identity and old values, INNOCAD translated the appearance of Jeddah’s old town buildings into a contemporary façade solution by using the very local and specific wooden elements. This additional layer includes not only a sun-shading component but also creates playful façade characteristics. The boarding school complex is split into 10 volumes called “houses.” Each of these spaces are connected by a ground floor base that provides access to each house, serves an open communication area and facilitates all general infrastructure for communally usage including study, retreat, play and arranging areas as well as a coffee point, health club, laundry and infirmary. The court yards at the base are meant to be for retreat or physically active zones. A house - with its five levels - provides up to 30 dorm rooms for 60 students and has a prayer room in the first floor. All floors connect to one of the other houses to assure a communication between the residents. The accompanying green atriums of this connection have both an atmospheric and positive effect on the climate of the space. Moreover, there is a common space on every floor with different features such a chill-out, play, cocoa room or a library. The basic drom room offering high privacy level for two students on 20 m² is strutured through four zones: the filter-zone between floor and dorm room, the study zone for focused learning, the wet cell and the retreat zone provideing the smallest unit of the boarding school - each person`s personal „cave“ for retreat.
