NEW CONSTRUCTION OF A MIXED USE BUILDING

competition: Entry 2004

central location in the old city of Graz / temporary living / block perimeter / square under the city / homogeneous building / wonderful Schlossberg view / lofts / urban recreation

INNOCAD´s concept for this invitation-only competition demonstrates how a boardinghouse might work in a “small” urban context. In a city of 250,000 inhabitants, that prides itself on historic architecture, developing a mixed-use building can be challenging. The implementation of such an idea requires a range of supporting measures to prove its economical viability. INNOCAD developed an urban hybrid in a central location, in the middle of the heritage-protected old city of Graz. The building solution combines temporary living/short-term accommodations with public and semi-public functions. Since the old city of Graz has been declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, each intervention in the historical old town is a much discussed debate. Sensitive to the existing height of the neighboring buildings, the ‘boardinghouse subrise’ has been keenly integrated into the historical vicinities and context.
