NEW CONSTRUCTION OF A PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN SALZBURG

private residence / new construction / flowing living space / floating retreat / wooden construction / archetypal single-family house

In a suburb of Salzburg, in a residential area dominated by private homes, a single-family house with a gabled roof was built in accordance with the context and the specifications of a development plan. The two-story basement building is functionally differentiated vertically, the upper floor has an introverted character, while the ground floor is extroverted. The open floor plan on the ground floor is the communicative heart of the house. Oriented around a service core, the kitchen overlooks the open living area. The generous glass surfaces create a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor space, giving the private rooms above a floating character. The design of a free ground floor zone and the compact layout extend into the garden and blurs the boundaries between inside and outside. Interior interventions such as built-in furniture and materials harmonize with the wood of the supporting structure or consciously create contrasts. The kitchen block and fireplace act as solitaires. A reduced color palette and interior surfaces with earth tones, wood, and stone emphasize the connection to nature and the garden. Supported by a steel structure, the wooden construction is elevated, making the gabled house appear to float above the living area. Native spruce in cross-laminated timber construction was used and is visible throughout the interior. An additional façade level serves as sun and privacy protection; the pre-weathered façade of the wooden structure underscores the family's retreat. The folding shutters of the perforated façade allow the wooden volume to close. The dark, pre-weathered façade extends over the entire house and the terrace area, acting as a protective gesture against the exposed and warm wooden elements of the living spaces.
