With the extension of "Das Eggenberg" Restaurant in the Graz district of Eggenberg, the existing venue was complemented by a multifunctional winter garden that can be used throughout the year. Acting as a transitional zone between the restaurant and the redesigned outdoor garden, the new addition creates a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces while expanding the dining experience with a versatile and atmospherically refined setting. Designed to accommodate up to 80 guests, the extension follows a clearly defined zoning strategy. The winter garden is characterized by a biophilic design approach, expressed through its material palette, integrated greenery, and lighting concept. Green walls structure the floor plan towards the existing building, establish visual connections, and subtly divide the open space into distinct zones. Large-scale acoustic wall and ceiling elements with fractal patterns, developed in collaboration with 13&9 Design and Fractals Research, are based on over 25 years of neuroscience and psychology research. Specific fractal patterns have been shown to reduce stress by up to 60% and decrease mental fatigue. Their effectiveness depends on an optimal level of complexity, which is implemented through their fractal aesthetics and enhances both acoustic performance and well-being when applied on large surfaces. These science-based design principles, combined with acoustic performance, contribute to the calming and pleasant atmosphere of the interior. In contrast to the open area with its direct connection to the outdoor garden, a series of private dining booths and niches are located in the more secluded zones of the winter garden. Warm tones, timber surfaces, and acoustically effective wall and ceiling treatments featuring fractal patterns create an intimate and exclusive atmosphere. Acoustically effective luminaires further enhance acoustic comfort while providing a focused lighting environment for smaller groups and private dining experiences. Different brightness levels and color temperatures allow the lighting to be adapted to a variety of functions and moods. The flexible layout accommodates a wide range of uses, from everyday restaurant operations to private celebrations and social events. The result is a space that balances openness and retreat, sociability and privacy, while evolving the restaurant's identity through a contemporary architectural language.
