EXTENSION AND NEW CONSTRUCTION OF A PRODUCTION AND OFFICE BUILDING FOR LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY IN GRAZ

  • Lighting Design

As the final element of a master plan developed by INNOCAD architecture for the XAL Group, the XALec project completes the comprehensive site development at XAL’s headquarters in Graz. The architectural design continues the existing industrial aesthetic and seamlessly integrates with the ensemble through a dark gray façade and black portals and window frames. The multifunctional building combines three central uses: the expansion of warehouse capacities, new office spaces, and a modern production facility. The heart of the project is a cleanroom production unit, which is climate-controlled and mechanically ventilated. Essential components for the production of lighting fixtures are manufactured here. Visitors can gain insights into the production processes through large glass openings during guided tours. The newly designed office spaces follow a zoned concept with open team workstations, attached meeting rooms, phone booths, and social areas. The clear structure of the layout reflects the company’s corporate design. In line with the principles of "New Holism," which strives to harmonize physical, virtual, and social aspects, special attention was given to the well-being of employees. In addition to open space structures, innovative lighting and acoustic solutions, the design incorporates the latest scientific findings from the fields of neuroscience and biophilic design. Central design elements are the large-scale acoustic wall panels featuring fractal patterns, based on the research of ScienceDesignLab, a collaboration between Prof Richard Taylor (University of Oregon & Fractals Research, USA) and 13&9 Design. Inspired by fractal patterns found in nature and their relaxing effect, they bring these natural structures into the interior to reconnect people with the health benefits of the beauty of nature. Studies show that such patterns can reduce stress by up to 60%, enhance cognitive performance, and improve concentration. A targeted acoustic lighting concept further enhances these effects.
