The first application of the AGORA concept for ibis Hotels has just been finished in Barcelona’s Poblenou district, a former industrial area that is quickly developing into one of the city’s vibrant, creative hubs. Following the AGORA concept’s main ideals, a variety of flexible spaces having modular furniture and adjustable elements offer various zones for both customers and locals. Here, concrete bricks and metal panels, in addition to other materials, make reference to the neighborhood’s manufacturing history. Meanwhile, some furniture and lighting have nearby origins, spirits and traditions, and are produced directly in the district. Within the lobby, guests check in at the bar and can choose from a range of possibilities, like the open library, communal table, silent area or lounge. The Localizer, a multifunctional space positioned next to the hotel´s entrance, creates a direct connection to its surroundings and provides a space for exchange between locals and hotel guests. This “glocal” notion is summarized by a large graffiti piece, done by Poblenou artist Jupiterfab. Thanks to adaptable elements and flexible layouts, guests find themselves in the mock-up rooms in Barcelona in an evolving and personalized ambiance. The mix-and-match style and special treatment of the room’s ceilings offer a surprising visual impact. One of the innovative new elements is the specially developed „function line,“ mounted on the rooms’ side walls. This plug-and-play element can be individualized, reminding one more of a private apartment than of a standardized hotel room.
