THE EDGE

CONVERSION AND EXTENSION OF AN MIXED-USE BUILDING IN NEW YORK
- Masterplanning & Urban Design
- Exterior Architecture
This mixed-use building is located in Williamsburg, one of the most dynamically growing and diverse areas in Brooklyn New York. The building reflects the hybrid context of the area by interpreting and consolidating the varied typologies of the neighborhood. Positioned at the corner of a main thoroughfare, THE EDGE encapsulates an existing building with new construction that is accentuated by community playground fences to create a context to the urban layout. The six story building integrates a restaurant and communal facility on the ground floor along with 9 apartments which are also located in the above existing and annexed building. Well organized residential spaces have access to the shared rooftop garden which offers a balanced and smooth transition from indoor to outdoor and fosters the interaction of the people and nature. For this project, customized wire mesh encloses the roof garden area that creates a semi transparent cave which also contains blurred graphic letter formations over the corner of the building - thus echoing Williamsburg's rich street art presence. Through its architectural and artistic context, THE EDGE represents a fusion of urban and cultural typologies; a perfect analogy of the multi- layered character of its environment.
